MailBag for Issue #4

Comments by Stephanie "Bobbi" Bergman

Every week our associate editor takes on the big ol' pile of mail for your reading enjoyment...got something to say? Send it in. You just might win a swanky loonygames t-shirt. Letters are presented exactly as they are recieved.

Quake, Unreal....boring?

Subject: rambling

Hey.. kickin' site. (The traditional suck up line). Anyway I'm just sitting over here at my computer.. hopelessly bored cuz I've got nothing to play *sniff*. A lot of guys rant and rave about Quake and Unreal but have you ever tried playing those games in singleplayer?? Ughh.. Few games nowadays are worth playing anymore(in singleplayer at least)

RPG's generally have a longer life on my shelf but once you've finished 'em.. well.. that's it. The whole Duke thing seems pointless to me... You can't play duke over the net and over a modem connection it's only two ppl. Not many of my friends have network cards either.. *sigh*

I really like Corn on the Cob and Bobbi's columns :) Hope ya site stays up forever..

Bored Outta My Mind (MFC)

We like suckups. J Well, I do. Anyway, am I the only one who LIKED Unreal multiplayer? Same with Quake, actually, I still go and play single player every once in a while. And I play with bots in Quake on at least a weekly basis, yah, they're annoying and they cheat, but they're still good target practice and there's no lag playing them. So...you can always do that. Download some bots, hell, Unreal COMES with bots, and fire up your own little deathmatch. :)

And saying you like my column is a great way to get a smile from me. :)

Er....huh??

I THINK THAT YOU ARE JUST TO MUCH OF A LITTLE BOY TO UNDERSTAND THAT GAMES ARE GAMES I AM NOT GONNA GO OUT AND KILL SOMEONE JUST BECAUASE I SAW IT IN A GAME!!!! ALSO OVER COURSE HE IS A MUSCLE MAN PLEASE TELL WHICH SUPER HERO IS NOT MUSCLER, BESIDES YOUR SUPER HERO MR. I SIT AT HOME AND DO NOTHING AND MAKE SURE I NEVER GET IN ANY TROUBLE I MEAN COME ON.ITS JUST A GAME .AND HERE IS SOME ADVICE......

IF YOU CAN`T HANDLE BIG BOY GAMES DON`T BUY THEM!

Ok, first of all, I'm not a boy. Second, I'm not little. Third, I DESEST html e-mail, thanks. And fourth? I haven't the foggiest idea what on earth you're talking about.

(I do love the "I sit at home and do nothing" line though) :)

loonygames presents: Vaporware?

Subject: Code on the cob

Feedback Person...Bobbi?

YAY! I've been recognized! Yup, that's me :)

First and foremost I do want to say this is a rather refreshing site. I enjoy it because it isn't so news related and is rather a bit of an inside look at the going ons both inside the development community and the game playing community. I look forward to this site seeing continued success.

Danke.

Okay, with the flattery out of the way, let's get to the fun stuff...

I just can't help myself, but I suspect "Code On The Cob" is going to demonstrate a couple of things about game development I don't think people are expecting to see. The first is...delays. I'm willing to bet Chris will see the pressure from his "real" job and will miss more than a few installments of his column. Secondly, and this one is a long shot, but I have a feeling it will come true....Vaporware baby! I honestly don't see how Chris is going to have the time to actually finish his game in any reasonable timeframe. The general spec layed out in his column seemed rather ambitious, to me at least. With his work on Duke Nukem Forever and the hard push he will be making come January to get that game out by mid-late next year, you can kiss his spare time bye bye. Will be interesting to see how this column really turns out.

That's all I have to say :)

Dean M.

Well, ya know, as bad as delays on the column may be (need I mention loony's whip again?), if they do happen, they'll teach everyone a lesson about game development. After all, if the column is to show people what goes into making a game, that's part of it, other pressures getting in the way and so on.

(Editor's note: here at loonygames, we select our columnists because we feel they can deliver great content, on time, and consistantly. While it'd be silly to think that once Duke Forever hits crunch time Chris will be able to keep up the *cough* demanding schedule we've given him, his biweekly schedule means he does have a bit of leeway. Besides...i'm ruthless when it comes to deadlines.)

On Elaine and Duke

Subject: Elaine Does Duke

I consider myself a veteran Dukester, a determined sleuth and just a regular kinda corvette driving macho guy and I never ever knew that there were two ways off that stupid roof!!!

Great story.

Now if I could just get MY wife to play the game I am so tired of scrabble.

Getting Elaine to play Duke was probably the result of four years of her listening to me blab, on a daily basis, about games she knew nothing about. Try that approach...maybe it'll work? (And the first line in her column...where she mentions the answering machine message? It was the funniest thing I've ever heard...she was SCREAMING for help.)

And hey, there's another way off the roof other than shooting out the fan???
