From the Mouth of Madness:

Welcome Back!

by Jason "loonyboi" Bergman

ell, it took us a little longer than we had originally planned, but hey...we're back! It feels great to be back. I thought I was going to go insane there (a little more than normal) since we were working on such cool stuff, and I couldn't show it to anyone. But hey...we're back. Yee haw!

So, what's new? Well, no doubt you've noticed the new design by now. Our two head art directors, Mike Sanzone and Dan Zalkus really outdid themselves on the new look. The new color scheme really looks like nothing else out there, and isn't quite as bare as the old one was. I love it.

And hey...did you notice the new illustrations? Dan Zalkus did a whopping 23 new black, white and blue illustrations for all of our columns (you'll note a new one right up there). Pretty spiffy, eh? Dan really did a great job on these...just wait until you see them all. In addition to those, Mike Sanzone did seven new full-color illustrations for other pages, such as the About, Submissions, and Feedback sections. Mike's a real goofball, and his interpretations of each of those are fantastic.

We've got some new staff members here as well. First and foremost is Russell "RadPipe" Lauzon, our new Features Editor. Russell is doing a heck of a job here, making sure that we've got a kickass new cover story every week (in other words, helping me out greatly). He's also got his own column, "Down the Pipe" that starts this issue. Look for that to run on Friday.

We've also added Rowan "Sumaleth" Crawford to the regular staff here. Rowan is the author of several cover stories, including the "Five Years of Doom" piece, and "When it's Done!" amongst others. He also contributed a lot of great cover illustrations, including one for "Totally Tribal" (my personal favorite of his) and of course, our E3 '99 article. Rowan will be working with Russell to make sure every cover story has an accompanying illustration, but he'll also be writing our new column, "Under Cover", which gives a little bit of background info about the artist for each week's cover, including details on how they do their magic, and some extra artwork as well. This week's cover is by Christopher "Derelict" Greenhaw, who was actually hired by Rogue Entertainment to work on their game, American McGee's Alice because of his illustration. How cool is that? Read all about it in "Under Cover".

We've got some great stuff lined up for you this week, including an exclusive new screenshot from Quake III: Arena, that we'll be running tomorrow. Pretty cool, huh? If that wasn't enough for you, be sure to stop by our IRC launch party tonight (Monday, November 8) at 10:00 EST in #loonygames at irc.yossman.net (a full server list, and IRC clients can be found at this page). The party will be big, kids...make sure you drop by. In addition to myself, Rowan, Russell, Mike, Dan, and other loonygames staff members, we'll be joined by tons of industry folk, including id Software's Paul Steed and Dave "Zoid" Kirsch, Raven's Jake Simpson and Kenn Hoekstra, Epic's Brandon "GreenMarine" Reinhart, and even John Romero will be dropping by. But that's just a few of them! Believe me, you won't want to miss this one.

Yep, this is going to be a fun week here at loonygames. We've got a ton of great content for you, a few surprises, and lots more. But hey...next week's going to get even better, with the relaunch of "Birth of a Gamer" (at long last!), our new multiplayer gaming column, "Game, Set, Match" and even a new classic gaming column by yours truly. Yep, it's going to be a scene, kids...be sure to check it all out.

Until next week, stay loony!

- Jason "loonyboi" Bergman is the editor in chief here at loonygames.
